Thyroid

The thyroid gland plays a major role in the metabolism, growth and development of the  body. It helps to regulate many body functions by constantly releasing a steady amount of thyroid hormones into the bloodstream.

Two of the most common issues we see with the Thyroid include:

Hypothyroidism – When the thyroid gland is underactive and not producing enough thyroid hormone

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis  – is an auto-immune disease caused when the body attacks the thyroid gland. Which can often result in an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States.

Some common signs of a thyroid problem include:

  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Weight gain
  • Hair loss
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Pain
  • Heat and/or cold intolerance

When diagnosing thyroid issues, many labs still keep an oudated, wide-range of “normal” which leaves patients still feeling bad with “normal” thyroid levels. Further, most doctors just treat the thyroid numbers without addressing what caused the problem in the first place. Our goal is to figure out the underlying cause and to treat the individual. We also take into account that Hashimotos is an auto immune condition and look for the reasons why the body is attacking the thyroid in the first place

Common treatment is usually with T4-only medications such as Synthroid, Levoxyl, or Levothyroxine but there is a subset of people who do not feel well on those medications alone and may benefit from the addition of cytomel and/or natural dessicated thyroid, such as Armour Thyroid . We treat based on your individual factors and the lab results and consider what medication will work best while also considering lifestyle and nutritional approaches to help optimize thyroid function and restore you to optimal health.
