A Note From Emily Kopek, PA-C

Starting Restorative Functional Medicine was very personal for me. It is my passion to help people restore and reclaim their health from chronic, complex health issues. All of this stems from my own journey and experiences.

When I was just 13 years old, I was diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis. I remember the doctor telling me then that all I needed to do was take this little pill for the rest of my life and I’d be fine. So I took it, but I wasn’t fine. Little did I know then what my journey would entail. I experienced continued fatigue, brain fog, pain, and thyroid levels that just continued to swing all over the place – not to mention the headaches that were a side-effect of the medication. That pill was certainly not fixing all of my problems.

Over time, this led to more doctors and more test, but few results. This was the catalyst that started me on my own research journey, because I knew in my gut that there had to be more to this story. I decided to go to PA school because not only did I want to find solutions for myself, I wanted to help others, too.

After graduating from PA School, I practiced primary care and women’s health. While I loved what I did, I couldn’t help but believe there was more I was missing. I kept seeing patients who had complaints like mine – but they had normal labs and so were essentially told it was all in their heads.

One day my Pharmacy Teacher from PA school came to visit my practice. He invited me to go to a Functional Medicine conference with him. And that changed everything. I knew immediately that this was the component I was missing in my own life and medical practice. I immediately delved deeper and started applying Functional Medicine principles with my clients – and all of a sudden, people who had been seeing little change before, started seeing results. Even I started feeling better. It became abundantly clear that this was the type of practice I wanted to be a part of because it was creating real change, so I left Primary Care and moved into Functional Medicine.

I am so excited to help people who have suffered with similar things that I have and to restore hope where it may have been lost. I think it is an honor to use what I’ve been through to help other people. I tend to develop a deep bond with my patients as I understand at a very deep level what many of them are walking through. I know how draining and discouraging chronic and complex issues can be, so at Restorative Functional Medicine, we are all about treating the whole person – addressing the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of chronic illness.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart, as though working for the Lord.” - Colossians 3:23

A Message from Kayla

My name is Kayla Herron, and I am a board-certified Physician Assistant. I have been a PA for 12 years now, and I am very excited to be a provider with Restorative Functional Medicine!

I grew up in Kingsport, TN., and graduated from East Tennessee State University with a BS in interdisciplinary studies, focusing on health sciences. My healthcare journey and my decision to become a provider came when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was a young teenager. I had always had a passion for helping and caring for others, but it was through my mother’s diagnosis and the exceptional care that she received from her health care team and providers, that lead me to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant. One thing my mother taught me after her diagnosis was, “if something feels off with your body, pursue it until you get answers!”

I entered the South College Physician Assistant program in October of 2009, where I met Emily, but also, very suddenly, and sadly, lost my mom three weeks later. As my mother had encouraged me to enter the program, and with the amazing support of Emily, my classmates, and professors, I continued on to graduate in December of 2011. I made it my goal to honor my mother’s memory and began my medical career in hematology and oncology, where I worked for three years. I really enjoyed the connections and deep bonds I formed with patients and their families, as well as the complexity of the hematology and oncology cases.

In 2015 I transitioned to a role in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, where I worked for nine years. While working in plastics, I continued caring for patients undergoing breast reconstruction surgeries, while also finding a passion for skin health and aesthetics. I love helping patients to feel more confident and comfortable in their skin, as well as focusing on skin health and protection.

I have decided to transition my role to Functional Medicine, as I find there can be such a gap in “traditional” medicine, with not treating the underlying causes of diseases or disorders, or treating individuals as a whole. It is important to me for my patients to feel seen, heard, and validated, and for us to work together in a patient centered approach to address all physical and mental aspects of their chronic diseases.

I am also very excited to bring my passion and skill of aesthetics, in various capacities, to Restorative Functional Medicine.

When I am not in the office, I enjoy spending time with, and traveling with, my husband, Dustin, our three daughters, Ella, Katie, and Ripley Ann, and our crazy Weimaraner, Izzy!

I am so excited to be a part of this great team and meet all of you.
